Ask the Genie — Slack Integration Setup Guide

Overview

Ask the Genie is an AI-powered enterprise assistant that connects Slack, Gmail, Outlook, Salesforce, HubSpot, and other business systems into a unified knowledge platform.

With Ask the Genie, users can:

  • Search and retrieve information from Slack using natural language.
  • Ask questions across Slack conversations, documents, emails, meetings, and CRM systems.
  • Receive AI-generated answers with source citations.
  • Organize content into workspaces for teams and departments.
  • Access business knowledge from multiple connected systems in a single interface.

Prerequisites

Before connecting Slack to Ask the Genie, ensure that:

  • You have an active Ask the Genie account.
  • You have a Slack workspace.
  • You have permission to install applications in your Slack workspace.
  • You have access to the Ask the Genie administration portal.

Install the Integration

Follow these six steps to authorize Ask the Genie to access your Slack data.

Sign in to Ask the Genie

Open Ask the Genie and sign in using your account credentials.

Step 1 — Sign in to your Ask the Genie account.

Navigate to Connectors

Open the navigation menu and select Connectors.

Select Slack

Locate the Slack connector and click Connect.

Choose your Slack workspace

After clicking Connect, you will be redirected to Slack. Select the Slack workspace you want to connect and review the requested permissions.

Review permissions

Ask the Genie requests only the permissions required to provide AI-powered knowledge retrieval and collaboration. Requested permissions may include:

  • Read Slack conversations
  • Read shared files
  • Read Slack canvases
  • Read channel information
  • Read user information
  • Search authorized Slack content
  • Send AI-generated messages
  • Read and manage reactions

Review the requested permissions carefully, then click Allow.

Connection complete

After successful authorization:

  • You will be redirected back to Ask the Genie.
  • Slack will appear as Connected in the Connectors dashboard.

Configure the Integration

Verify the Slack connection

  1. Navigate to Connectors.
  2. Confirm Slack displays a Connected status.

Configure workspace access

  1. Navigate to Workspaces.
  2. Create a new workspace or open an existing workspace.
  3. Assign the connected Slack data source to the workspace.

Configure data sources

Within the workspace, select which connected systems should be available. Examples:

  • Slack
  • Gmail
  • Outlook
  • HubSpot
  • Salesforce
  • Fathom
  • Fireflies

Using Ask the Genie

After setup is complete, users can begin asking questions using natural language.

Slack questions

  • Summarize today's engineering discussion.
  • What decisions were made during yesterday's product meeting?
  • Find messages related to Project Phoenix.
  • Show files shared in the marketing channel.
  • Which channels discussed the new product launch?

Cross-platform questions

  • Show the latest HubSpot opportunity discussed in Slack.
  • Summarize customer feedback from Slack and Salesforce.
  • Find meeting notes mentioning Project Alpha.
  • Search documents related to customer onboarding.

Example AI response

Ask the Genie retrieves information from connected systems and generates a consolidated answer. The response may include conversation summaries, Slack messages, shared files, canvas information, related business records, and source citations.

Citations & Sources

Ask the Genie provides citations whenever source information is available. Sources may include:

  • Slack conversations
  • Slack Canvases
  • Shared Slack files
  • SharePoint documents
  • Emails
  • Meeting transcripts
  • HubSpot CRM
  • Salesforce

Disconnecting Slack

Important

Disconnecting Slack prevents Ask the Genie from accessing new Slack data.

Existing indexed information may remain available according to your organization's data retention settings.

Disconnect steps

  1. Navigate to Connectors.
  2. Locate Slack.
  3. Click Disconnect.
  4. Confirm the action.

Uninstalling the Integration

To completely remove Ask the Genie from Slack:

  1. Open your Slack workspace.
  2. Navigate to Apps or Manage Apps.
  3. Locate Ask the Genie.
  4. Remove or uninstall the application.
  5. Confirm the removal.

Data impact of uninstalling

Before uninstalling, consider the following:

  • Slack access permissions will be revoked.
  • Future synchronization will stop.
  • New Slack content will no longer be available in Ask the Genie.
  • Previously generated conversations and AI insights may remain available unless deleted by an administrator.

Privacy & Security

Ask the Genie is designed with enterprise security and privacy in mind.

  • OAuth authentication is used to securely connect your Slack workspace.
  • Access tokens are encrypted and securely stored.
  • Customer data is processed only for authorized requests.
  • Customer data is not used to train public AI models without explicit permission.

Troubleshooting
